How to dress for a run or bike ride
What to wear for a run? This is a question that even experienced runners often struggle with. Appropriate and comfortable clothing is the cornerstone of successful running. If you feel good, you will run easily, with joy and you will always be prepared for any weather.
Quality first
Generally speaking, running is a very low-cost sport, so you can definitely afford to buy quality clothes. Such clothing should first of all be functional, light and breathable. The elasticity of the clothing is also a must, as it should not constrict or gather anywhere (it prevents chafing). Good running clothes don't have to be expensive, but they can last and serve you well.
Watch the weather
One of the most important factors when deciding how to dress for a run is definitely the weather. Unfortunately, this factor sometimes predicts the worst. It is essential to monitor the outside temperature as well as the air humidity. Another essential piece of information is whether it's raining or snowing (or about to). Definitely don't underestimate the power of the wind either. Especially if you love mountain running, then a good knowledge of the weather is a must.
Layering your running clothes
Running clothes should be light so they can be easily layered - it's always better to have several thin layers than one thick one. Despite the fact that we cannot give you exact instructions on how to dress for running (the degree of sweating and physiological reactions to temperature changes are very individual), the general principles apply to everyone.
1. the layer of clothing should be functional, wicking sweat away from the body, close-fitting and with flat seams that do not scratch or press anywhere. This applies especially to underwear, socks, tank tops and shorts, ¾ pants or thin leggings
2. layer includes running shirts with long or short sleeves (they can also be insulated) and running sweatshirts that are light and breathable. You can also find running pants in different lengths, cuts and materials - of course you can use them separately or as a second layer for thin leggings.
3. the layer is against the cold and the wind - this is where light jackets against the wind or waterproof ones against the rain come into play. Such a jacket should first of all have taped seams, because only then will you be sure that the joints of the material will not let water through (technically, this is the application of special strips with the help of heat and pressure). These types of jackets are used for sports in adverse conditions, hiking or running. Runners agree that there is no value in running in a raincoat (due to low breathability, one sweats too much in it).
How to dress for cycling is probably the most frequent question of all cyclists. If you don't dress properly, the whole ride can make you really uncomfortable. What are the principles of choosing the right clothing for a bike, you ask? How to properly layer clothes and how do these principles change with the seasons? Then this article is exactly for you.
Are you an athlete or a tourist?
Yes, we admit, this sentence sounds really funny, but in order to choose the right clothes, answering this question is necessary. If you are an athlete and you are mainly concerned with training, then you should go the route of professional cycling clothing. However, if you are a tourist, comfort and style will also play a role for you - you probably don't want to look like Peter Sagan when you go to see the castle or stop at a pub along the way.
The basis is functional clothing or fit - slim design
When dressing for a bicycle, you must pay attention to several principles. Use multiple thin layers that you can put away if you overheat. Before driving, always find out what the weather will be like, weather conditions and possible rain. Then nothing will surprise you! But back to functional underwear. This material is worn directly on the body, thanks to which it immediately wicks sweat away from the body. As long as your bottom layer isn't soaked with sweat, your body will stay dry and warm. The so-called fit – slim design is close-fitting clothing directly on the body, often made of elastic materials. Such clothing is a suitable choice for a bicycle, as it imposes minimal air resistance.
How to properly layer cycling clothing
The correct cycling clothing should be breathable and light. The top layer (in case of colder weather) should be quick-drying - in case you get wet.
Underlayer
As mentioned above, the base should consist of functional underwear that will keep you dry. It usually has flat seams, so it doesn't rub against the skin and increases the overall feeling of comfort. For the upper part of the body, you can get tank tops and t-shirts made of the same material - whatever suits you.
The biggest problem usually arises when choosing the right cycling pants. They can be short, long, but also three-quarter length, tight like leggings or loose. This just depends on your preferences and the weather you need the pants for.
However, the pants must have a high-quality inner liner. It prevents bruises, sweating and should also have antibacterial properties. Don't be in too much of a hurry to choose the right one - because otherwise you won't be able to sit for long.
Additional layers
Classic cycling jerseys are very comfortable and usually meet functional parameters. Be sure to buy a jersey with a zip (just at the neck or long), as it allows you to cool down quickly and easily. The zipper should end with a small tunnel to prevent the zipper from scratching your neck and chin. If you really want to minimize heat loss, you can get a zipper covered with a gusset.
A huge advantage of cycling clothing is the fact that you can conveniently add it piece by piece. However, it is true that the top layer should also meet certain breathability conditions. In colder weather, you will also need long sleeves, or at least functional sleeves or roll-up sleeves. Don't forget that you should have a top layer with you to protect you from the rain.
